Canadian Armed Forces Platoon Organization

A lot of people have been asking about platoon and company structures in the Canadian Armed Forces, and while there is always some fluidity as dictated by the mission parameters and other factors, this guide should be helpful enough for your gaming needs.

The first major distinction would be whether it is a mechanized or light infantry platoon. Let’s start with mechanized, as it’s a little more complicated:

HQ Section (mech):

  •  Platoon Comd
  • Platoon L 2IC
  • LAV Sgt (or HQ Sect Comd)
  • Wpns Det Comd (or HQ Sect 2IC)
  •  Driver-  Gunner
  •  Signaller
  • 2 x Wpns Crew (for whatever you want to deploy)

Rifle Sections x 3 (mech):

  • Section Commander (C7/C8)
  • Section 2IC (C7/C8)
  • 4x Riflemen (C7/C8, fill roles of driver and gunner in LAV)
  • 2x Grenadiers (C7/M203)
  • 2x LMG (C9)

A light infantry platoon has 8 man sections, made up of the two fireteams with either the Section commander or 2IC, a rifleman, grenadier, and machine gunner. Things can get further complicated when you start adding in attachments like Medics, Forward Observation Officers (FOOs), MPs, Engingeers, Civil Military Cooperation units (CIMIC), etc.

When you get to the company level, there are 3 platoons, with a company level weapons detachment.

Awesome article, though I’m still a bit in the air on wether to make a light infantry platoon or do a bit of my own research for a patrol pathfinder detachment. Can’t wait to see what’s next.

    1. Patrol Pathfinders are a little different, there is a great article on the evolution of the role of PPFs in this Journal here – http://www.journal.forces.gc.ca/vol13/no4/page53-eng.asp
